Foreign Ministry revealed on Friday that efforts were underway to transport 15 Maldivians in Ukraine to Hungary.
They will be repatriated to Maldives from Hungary.
Director of Communications at the Foreign Ministry Miuwan Mohamed said that Maldivians in Ukraine were currently travelling to cross the Ukraine-Hungary border. The ministry was working with the Maldivian Embassy in Berlin, Germany, as well as Hungary government to evacuate them to safer places.
Previously the government had said over 50 Maldivians live in Ukraine, most of them students completing their MBBS.
While most of them had already returned to Maldives, some of their travel was halted once Ukraine was invaded. Currently, nine students are in Ukraine.
"MoFA [Ministry of Foreign Affairs] and @MDVinGermany [Maldivian Embassy in Germany] working round the clock to take the 9 remaining on the eastern side of Ukraine to safer areas," Miuwan said via Twitter, tagging the official account for Maldives' Embassy in Germany.
"All Maldivians [in Ukraine] are doing well."
Maldivian government has provided financial assistance to all the remaining Maldivians currently in Ukraine. Higher Education Ministry has also stated on Thursday evening that they have increased the limit placed on BML cards - a cap that was implemented amongst the Covid-19 crisis - of Maldivians in Ukraine.
