President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with the British High Commissioner to the Maldives, Caron Rohsler, yesterday morning at the Office of the President-elect. Vice President-elect Hussain Mohamed Latheef was also present at the meeting.
According to the Office of the president-elect, the British High Commissioner congratulated Dr. Muizzu on his victory in the presidential election on behalf of the British government, the people and herself. The High Commissioner expressed her hope that relations between the UK and the Maldives will be further strengthened during Dr. Muizzu's presidential term.
The High Commissioner said that it was a great honour to be the first foreign diplomat to meet with the president-elect and assured him of the continuation of close relations between the United Kingdom and the Maldives.
Dr. Muizzu expressed gratitude to the High Commissioner for her assurance and stated his commitment to further strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to the Office of the President-elect, Dr. Muizzu also expressed hope for significant benefits to the people and the country through expanding and strengthening cooperation with the UK in various areas.
Speaking at the success celebration held last Monday night to celebrate the election win, Dr. Muizzu indicated that several diplomats were requesting to meet with him. Dr. Muizzu said he would attend to these request in line with established procedures, and that he would meet with diplomats from neighboring countries as well.
Indirectly responding to foreign media labelling him as a pro-China leader, Dr. Muizzu has said he would adopt a "pro-Maldives" policy, and would maintain close relations with all countries who support this policy.
