Drugs worth MVR 45 million has been seized in one and a half months: Ihusan

Speaking at a meeting in Feydhoo, Homeland Minister, Ali Ihusan shared that drugs that are worth MVR 44.5 million has been seized within the past 45 days and stated that the rehabilitation of those suffering from addiction is underway.

Minister of Homeland Security, Ali Ihusan stated last night that due to the efforts made by the government to establish a permanent solution for the country's drug problem, narcotics worth MVR 44.5 million has been seized and prevented from being distributed within the past 45 days.

Speaking at the Feydhoo meeting during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Addu, Minister Ihusan stated that the government is working to find an appropriate solution for the drug issue. He assured that the president’s target is to permanently cease this chemical abuse plaguing the country within the upcoming five years.

“With efforts made in approximately one and half month, we have prevented drugs worth MVR 44.5 million from reaching the streets,” Ihusan said.

Additionally, the minister also remarked that efforts are being made to rehabilitate those suffering from addiction and reintegrate them back into the society.

He highlighted that there are approximately 500 persons suffering from drug addiction who sought treatment at the beginning of this administration, and that the rehabilitation of 300 of these individuals has now been arranged and begun.

Ihusan assured that an arrangement for the treatment of the remaining individuals are also underway.

The Minister further stated that the Ministry of Homeland Security has also been making efforts to resolve the issue of illegal immigrants. He shared that a task force has been established to achieve this target.

“Over 1800 people. This number includes illegal immigrants who left the country willingly as well as people we forcefully deported,” said the Minister.

As stated by Ihusan, the government’s aim is to ensure a permanent end to the problems created within the society due to illegal immigrants. He assured that the work to reverse this problem is proceeding with special attention to this aim.
