Ali Shujau has been designated as the new Police Commissioner, receiving the official letter of appointment from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Shujau, 51, previously served as the Assistant Commissioner of Police.

Shujau joined the police force in 2006 following his position as Assistant Principal at Majeediyya School. His last stint was as the Commander of the Malé Area. Over the past 18 years, he dedicated himself to providing modern training and higher education opportunities to the police.

He also played a leading role in conducting police training to MQA standards and introducing a degree program within the force. Under his leadership, three batches of the law enforcement degree program have been successfully completed.

In addition to heading the Police Academy, Shujau led the Family and Child Protection Division (FCPD), initiating a rehabilitation program to discourage children from joining gangs. Holding a Master of Management from The International Islamic University of Malaysia, Shujau is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session 277 at the University of Virginia in the United States.

Having served the government for 25 years, Shujau's appointment as Police Commissioner follows the retirement of Mohamed Hameed on November 15. Since then, Assistant Commissioner Farhad Fikree has temporarily overseen the police department.

Shujau was appointed as the Police Commissioner after being interviewed and evaluated by the Police Board according to the Police Service Act. The Police Commissioner is appointed by the President on the advice of the Minister from among the names evaluated by the Police Board submitted to the Minister.

Shujau and Assistant Commissioner Ismail Naveen submitted their nominations for the post of Police Commissioner. However, Naveen did not meet the criteria set by the Police Board for the post.
