The Maldives government on Tuesday condemned the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov.
In a tweet posted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government condemned the action and sent condolences to the family of Ambassador Karlov.
He was assassinated by a police officer while speaking at the opening of an art exhibition.
Russian officials initially said that the attack was carried out by a radical extremist. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said following the death of Karlov that the country considers the attack as a "terrorist act."
The assassination is though to be a provocative terror attack which was committed by a newly graduated off-duty policeman while Turkish security officials identified the attacker as Mert Altıntaş, who had graduated from İzmir Rüştü Ünsal Police Academy in 2014.
Andrey Karlov began his diplomatic career in 1976. He was appointed as the Ambassador to Turkey in 2013.
