A Russian passenger plane that erupted in a ball of fire on the runway of Moscow's busiest airport, killed a total of 41 people Sunday evening.

According to authorities, aside from the dead, nine people were in hospital, three seriously injured.

The jet, carrying 73 passengers and five crew members, took off from Sheremetyevo at 1820 and the crew issued a distress signal shortly afterwards, officials said.

According to the pilot, it was lightning that had led to an emergency landing. Since, the aircraft's black boxes have been found and handed over to investigators, a source in the Russian emergency services told news agencies.
