The government of Maldives, on Thursday, strongly condemned the recent attacks carried out by Israel on the occupied territory of Gaza, resulting in the death and injury of several Palestinian civilians.

The violence was triggered on Tuesday when Israel carried out a strike on an Islamic Jihad commander. The official death toll had reached 34 by the time the ceasefire began on Thursday morning.

The administration and the Maldivian people expressed sincere condolences to the families of the victims of Israeli aggression in Gaza.

The official statement also welcomed efforts by the international community, particularly Egypt, to de-escalate the situation and commended the ceasefire which was secured.

Furthermore, the government of Maldives expressed deep concern over the disproportionate use of force by Israel on unarmed civilians, including on women and children in occupied territories.

The statement highlighted that the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel violated international law and relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

Expressing unwavering support for the Government of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian people, Maldives reiterated the belief that lasting peace in the Middle East is impingent on securing a two-state solution which establishes Palestine as an independent and sovereign state, based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.
