Special Envoy to the President of Palestine Dr Mahmoud Abbas, Dr Mahmoud Al Habbash, on Wednesday, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid during his official visit to the country.
In the meeting held at the ministry, Minister Shahid and Dr Al Habbash exchanged views on enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Minister Shahid reaffirmed Maldives' commitment to the Palestinian cause and reiterated that Maldives would continue to advocate for the fundamental rights of Palestinian people within the international community.
Dr Al Habbash is currently serving as Advisor for Religious Affairs and Islamic Relations (Minister) to President Abbas and Supreme Judge of Sharia Courts (Chief Justice) of the State of Palestine.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also met Dr Al Habbash on Wednesday and accepted a letter from Palestinian President Abbas. The possibility of President Solih visiting Palestine was also discussed.
The meetings between government officials and the Palestinian envoy reflect the administration's position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In his address to the United Nation General Assembly, President Solih remarked that "Maldives will always stand unwavering in its support for the Palestinians, in their endeavour to achieve an independent and sovereign State".
