The resolution, submitted by Kolamaafushi Constituency President Mahfooz Saeed, states that the party will assist such members in contesting for reelection and actively support their campaigns.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution pledging support members of Parliament who lose their seats due to floor crossing to the MDP under the recently amended constitution.
The resolution, submitted by Kolamaafushi Constituency President Mahfooz Saeed, states that the party will assist such members in contesting for reelection and actively support their campaigns.
The resolution criticizes the constitutional amendment, asserting that it undermines MPs' free will to represent the interests of the people and violates the fundamental structure of the Constitution.
It also calls for political activities and collaborations with civil society to protest against the change until the law is revised.
In addition, the National Assembly passed a petition, introduced by North Galolhu Constituency President Mariya Ahmed Didi, urging the repeal of the amendment.
The petition claims that the amendment disrupts governance, infringes on public representation, and was enacted without public consent. It calls on the Parliament and the President to avoid actions that compromise the people's power.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, earlier said that the amendment restores voters' rights by preventing MPs from changing their political alignment after election, thereby upholding the people's original mandate. He said that the amendment ensures elected representatives remain accountable to the voters' chosen political ideology.
