Projects being carried out in the Maldives by India are progressing smoothly, said India's Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar today at the CII Annual Business Summit 2024 held in New Delhi.

The minister's remarks were made in response to a question asked at the summit. He added that despite recent strains on the relationship between both countries, there is increased hope of fully resolving those issues.

Both countries have been making efforts to rekindle the long lasting neighbourly friendliness following the high tensions which resulted from high officials of the Maldivian government making disrespectful comments about India. In fact, Foreign Minister of Maldives Moosa Zameer travelled to India for the first time in an official capacity just weeks ago, where both countries engaged in discussions of mutual cooperation.

Following the trip, Minister Zameer said that there are no issues between both countries and that it has now been overcome.

Over the past five years, India has supported Maldives in implementing six projects for which the India gave MVR 22 million (USD 1.43). Out of this, the biggest fund allocation was directed towards the Villimalé-Gulhifalhu connecting bridge project which is still underway. India extended a loan of USD 400 million for the project.
