Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has decided to forward a case against two police officers following the death of Adam Athhar, who took his own life while in police custody.
Athhar had been detained in connection with holding a woman hostage at knifepoint in August last year.
A media official from the Prosecutor General's Office (PG) revealed that HRCM has forwarded the case three times during the duty prosecution stage, most recently on December 19. However, PG Office has repeatedly sent the case back, citing the need for further investigation.
HRCM has not yet released a statement on the matter.
Athhar had held his partner at knifepoint on a motorcycle. During an attempt to flee, a police officer struck Athhar on the head with a baton, resulting in injuries to his head and face.
While police stated that scans and tests revealed no serious injuries, Athhar was admitted to ADK Hospital for treatment before being discharged and placed under arrest.
Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan, in an unofficial press briefing, shared CCTV footage from Athhar’s cell. The footage showed that Athhar began preparing to take his life without any police intervention. No officers were monitoring the cell at the time, despite the facility being equipped for around-the-clock surveillance.
The footage further shows that police entered Athhar’s cell approximately 30 minutes after his death. An officer passing by was the first to notice the incident and alerted others. While officers were seen cutting down the material used by Athhar and placing him on the floor, no efforts were made to administer CPR or emergency medical treatment.
