In a significant stride towards advancing communication infrastructure in the Maldives, the Japanese government has extended its support by providing an additional USD 3.5 million grant for the ongoing Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Network Development Project.
The agreement was formally sealed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer represented the Government of Maldives, and Ambassador Takeuchi Midori signed on behalf of the Japanese government.
The Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Network Development Project, initially launched in 2022 with a substantial $25 million grant from Japan, is a comprehensive initiative aimed at establishing a state-of-the-art digital TV network across the Maldives.
This transformative project is expected to reach its completion later this year, promising to bring high-quality television content to 90 percent of the population through eight local channels, all accessible free of charge.
Beyond its entertainment value, the broadcasting network holds strategic importance by serving as a versatile platform. Notably, the technology deployed in the project opens avenues for establishing an early warning system, particularly crucial in the face of natural disasters. This dual-purpose approach underscores Japan's commitment to not only enhancing the entertainment landscape but also contributing to the safety and resilience of the Maldivian community.
Speaking on the occasion, Foreign Minister Zameer emphasized the far-reaching impact of the project on the socio-economic development of the Maldives. He underscored the project's potential to elevate the accessibility of information and entertainment for a vast majority of the population, thereby fostering a more connected and informed society.
Minister Zameer also expressed gratitude for the longstanding assistance of the Government of Japan in the developmental journey of the Maldives. He acknowledged Japan's continuous support and affirmed the commitment of the Maldivian government to strengthen this enduring partnership further.
The collaboration between the Maldives and Japan in the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Network Development Project stands as a testament to the shared commitment to technological advancement, disaster preparedness, and mutual growth. As the project progresses, it is poised not only to revolutionize the media landscape but also to fortify the Maldives against the challenges posed by natural disasters, contributing to the overall well-being and resilience of the nation.
