Police have said that 15 kilograms of drugs have been found from the ongoing drug operation in Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadhedhoo.
In a statement made by the police on Friday morning, they said a large amount of drugs were found buried in the woods of Hoadedhoo. The island is being searched by a joint operation conducted by Drug Enforcement Intelligence and South Police.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said that searches will be conducted at various locations in Hoadedhoo following intelligence they received regarding drugs that are being smuggled into the Maldives.
However, the police did not clarify whether all 15 kilos of drugs found in Hoadedhoo was from the woods or from other parts of the island. They had received reports that drugs were hidden in various locations in the island.
While an operation like this is ongoing right now, three people were arrested from Hoadedhoo on Tuesday for drug related crimes.
One of the detainees, Abdulla Rasheed, 42, had died while under police custody, which resulted in public outcry. Police Commissioner had said that he was arrested in connection of smuggling large amounts of drugs to Maldives and that it was sad that he had passed away.
The case is being investigated by National Integrity Commission and Human Rights Commission. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had also instructed to conduct a fair investigation into this case.
