IMF commends President Dr Muizzu's public-sector reforms, says it may promote sustainable economic growth

Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Monday.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2024 currently being held in Dubai.

During the meeting, MD Georgieva highlighted how crucial it is to implement comprehensive fiscal structural reforms and consolidation strategies to strengthen a versatile economy protected against external shocks and internal challenges.

However, she went on to commend the President's foreward-thinking approach, appreciating the public sector reforms the President noted in his inaugural Presidential address. She noted that these steps could pave the path to ensuring sustainable economic growth and stability in the Maldives.

She further commended the close relations that President Dr Muizzu maintains with the public, and the efforts for transparency in the administration.

Further potential areas of cooperation including climate change, adaptation and resilience were also discussed.

President Dr Muizzu expressed deep gratitude to the IMF for the cooperation and assistance provided to Maldives over the years.

Kristalina Georgieva is also the former CEO of the World Bank and has previously served as the Vice President for Budget and Human Resources of the European Commission.
