President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, urging Maldivian students to return and serve the country after completing their studies, revealed that the government plans to create high paying jobs for educated people starting next year.

Speaking at the ceremony to handover President’s and High Achiever’s scholarships to those who scored well in last year’s A Level, President Dr. Muizzu said that there are a lot of Maldivians who work abroad because of low paying jobs locally, and that the government has policies to change this.

Adding that the government needs human resources and expertise in various fields, the President pledged to hire educated locals to high paying jobs.

“The government will dedicate MVR 200 million from the state budget to give high salaries to educated people,” President Dr. Muizzu said at the event held at Huravee School in Malé City.

“[I] will allocate MVR 200 million from the state budget so people educated in various fields would receive a significantly high salary from the government. This would result in government jobs paying better than the private sector. There would be no need to stay abroad,” the President further added.

The president said that the funds would be taken out from the budget currently allocated for various infrastructure development projects, adding that both human resources and infrastructure development is important and that it is the way Maldives will be developed.

President Dr. Muizzu in his speech, also addressed the housing issue in the country, and said that one reason students do not come back is because of the lack of places to stay. However, he pledged to solve the housing crisis, and said that it would allow them to start their own lives and live with their families, calling on all students to aim to return to Maldives after completing their studies.

The other biggest complaint from students is the lack of jobs, said President Dr. Muizzu. As a measure to solve this problem, many fields in the country will solely be dedicated for locals in the future, he said.

Concluding his speech, he called on to all locals working abroad to consider moving back to serve the country.
