Some areas of Male' City are experiencing power cuts due to theft of a cable in a STELCO transformer.
The area affected is Abadhahfehi Magu, Medhuziyaaraiy Magu, Kalhuhuraa Magu and Karankaa Magu. Several residences on these streets, as well as Majeedhiya School are facing power interruptions.
STELCO said that they are currently working on laying a new cable and restoring electricity.
The company's Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said that one cable in the transformer had been stolen, with attempts having been made to cut through a second cable.
"It is our sincere request that persons committing such acts, as well as those complicit through buying the stolen cables, are caught and taken legal action against as this is extremely dangerous to those doing it, and in addition to the loss it causes STELCO, it poses great inconvenience to the general public," he said.
While such incidents have occurred before as well, it has also been observed that some people stay at the market area to sell stolen cables. Police have made attempts to put a stop to such actions.
Earlier, one person who attempted to steal cables from a transformer had died through electrocution.
