Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, on Thursday, resigned from his post as Chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).
The former Minister of Islamic Affairs had resigned from his post ahead of the upcoming opposition coalition administration.
Taking to Twitter, Dr. Shaheem assured that he will remain steadfast in serving the nation and the religion despite his resignation from the post at IUM.
Dr. Shaheem joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and contested in the 2018 presidential election as the running mate of incumbent President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Dr. Shaheem had earlier decided against relinquishing his title prior to running as vice-president on the request of President Yameen, despite having initially stated intent to do so.
Whilst Dr. Shaheem has resigned from his post, members of the opposition had earlier called for his resignation, claiming that the institution was politicized under his chancellorship.
Dr. Shaheem was among founding members of IUM and had previously served as Vice Chancellor at the university.
