Self-exiled Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday met with two members of the Maldives United Opposition (MUO) and ministers of its Shadow Cabinet in Sri Lanka.

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has not yet disclosed what the former president discussed during his meeting with religiously conservative Adhaalath Party’s deputy leader Ali Zahir and State Trading Organisation (STO)’s former Managing Director Adam Azim of the opposition coalition, and with MUO’s Shadow Cabinet.

Former President Nasheed is currently in neighbouring Sri Lanka to hold discussions of the political situation of the Maldives. He has been meeting with top officials of MDP during his visit.

Nasheed also participated in a National Council meeting on Wednesday for the first time in over a year, during which he sought the members’ opinions on decisions regarding the political climate and future of MDP.

Withholding details of Nasheed’s meetings in Sri Lanka, MDP stated that the details of the meeting will be disclosed once shared with coalition partners.

Nasheed had also shared his concerns over the Maldives’ political and economic situations with foreign ambassadors during this visit.

Former President Nasheed, who is sentenced to thirteen years in jail for the arbitrary detention of a judge during his administration, is currently living in the United Kingdom under political asylum. He had also visited Sri Lanka last year August and remained for the duration of a week.
