The Maldives government has imposed a travel ban under a court order on one of the top political figures of Maldives United Opposition (MUO), Shidhatha Shareef, and obstructed her at Velana International Airport.
In a tweet posted by Adhaalath Party, of which she is a member, it stated that her ban was imposed early Thursday and was obstructed at the airport.
Speaking to Mihaaru, Shidhatha confirmed the matter, saying that she was informed of the ban upon her return from a personal trip to neighbouring India and Sri Lanka. Shidhatha added that she was also taken to the airport's Tourist Police station.
“A document was given to me which said that Immigration has suspended my passport. I was kept in Tourist Police for a short interrogation. No case or issue was mentioned, and no reason was given for the travel ban.”
No official statement has been released regarding the issue yet.
Shidhatha, who is also a member of MUO's Shadow Cabinet, was earlier taken to Police headquarters and her phone seized over the funds raised by MUO for people and families of people arrested in opposition strikes.
