The lower court on Thursday ordered Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, the Home Minister of Maldives United Opposition (MUO)’s Shadow Cabinet, to pay back the loan of USD 20,000 (MVR 308,400) he took from former lawmaker Mohamed Ramiz.
Ramiz had filed the lawsuit against Thasmeen at the Civil Court over the latter’s failure to pay back the loan within the agreed period of time.
The Civil Court’s verdict stated that Thasmeen had not paid his loan to Ramiz by the agreed date of June 9, 2012. The cheque he gave Ramiz to his State Bank of India (SBI) account should he be unable to repay the loan could also not be cashed, the court noted.
The verdict further highlighted that Thasmeen had not responded favourably to various attempts by Ramiz seeking his repayment.
The court granted Thasmeen a period of one month to pay his loan of USD 20,000 and Ramiz’s attorney fee of MVR 30,000.
Ramiz and Thasmeen had both been members of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
