Encouraging acts of violence contradicts freedom of expression: HRCM

HRCM said that while freedom of expression is a broad constitutional right, it must be exercised responsibly and within limits that respect the rights of others.

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the encouragement of violence, stating that it is unacceptable and contrary to the principles of freedom of expression.

The statement came following remarks by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail at a press conference, defending comments made by a party activist during an MDP meeting in Kulhudhuffushi City. Addressing criticism, Fayyaz stated, "If the public are dealt with poorly, Ameen's fate must be replicated."
