Table tennis players Fathimath Dheema and Mohamed Shaffan Ismail were named the best athletes of the year at the Maldives Sports Awards gala night.
This marks Dheema's second consecutive win as the best female athlete, having secured the award last year as well. She also claimed the Best Female TT Player and Best Youth Female Athlete titles, winning the youth award for the third consecutive year.
Shaffan was awarded the Best Male TT Player of the Year, while table tennis player Akhyaar Ahmed Khalid was named the Most Promising Male Athlete of the Year.
Handball Association won the Best Sports Association award, competing against the Table Tennis and Bodyboarding Associations.
Both Dheema and Shaffan played significant roles in Maldives' success at the Indian Ocean Island Games last year.
Shaffan earned silver medals in the men's singles, doubles, and team events, partnering with Moosa Munsif Ahmed. He also won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles category, paired up with Dheema.
Dheema secured three gold medals at the Indian Ocean Island Games, winning in the singles, doubles, and team events, partnering with Rafa Nazim in the latter two.
