Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) leader Ahmed Faris Maumoon has announced his candidacy for the presidential elections as an independent contender.

Faris has successfully collected the necessary 1500 signatures required for an independent candidate.

Faris said that his decision to run as an independent candidate is driven by his commitment to reform the governance of the Maldives in alignment with the aspirations and preferences of the people.

Initially, Faris had intended to run as the presidential candidate of the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM). However, the Elections Commission (EC) dissolved the MRM, citing the party's failure to meet the legal requirement of having at least 3,000 members.

When MRM submitted its case against dissolution to the Civil Court, an order was issued to EC to cease any attempts to dissolve the party. The court ruled against the EC's request to review this decision.

Following the legal proceedings, the commission said that there were no obstacles preventing the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) from nominating a candidate for the presidential elections.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the presidential candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had extended an invitation to the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) to form a coalition for the upcoming elections scheduled for September 9. However, despite being a coalition partner in the current government, the MRM declined this invitation and chose not to join with MDP.
