Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) confirms Deputy Minister of Transport Minstry Shimaz Ali was attacked by a group of people on the road on Friday night.

Shimaz is a member of the political party MRM.

Details regarding the attack on Shimaz, the injuries he sustained were not disclosed. It is unclear who had attacked him or what their purpose was either.

Prior to this attack, his motorcycle was vandalized, in addition to threats he has received through phone calls to his family members.

MRM has condemned the attack on Shimaz, and called for the authorities to investigate this matter and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Recently, Minister for Transport Aishath Nahula had accused Shimaz of illegally registering vehicles and other corruption charges. She had sent a letter to the President's Office, requesting Shimaz be removed from the post for these charges, and as he has harmed the integrity other political appointees at the ministry hold as well.

Shimaz has previously told Mihaaru News that he has not done anything against the law and that the minister was aware of how he was carrying out his responsibilities.

The MRM had also looked into his case in connection with the misuse of his official position to hand changing the number plates of all vehicles in the country to a company called Vasajio. However, the party decided not to take any action against him as the PG did not file for charges and sent the case back to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

Shimaz was once a renowned sports journalist in Maldives. He was made the deputy minister of transport during the current administration on the MRM slot.
