Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) called not to restrict the right to assembly on Wednesday night.

In response to the announcement made by police against opposition coalition, MRM condemned any political activity that may harm or disrupt the society and its citizens.

MRM is one of the partners of the current coalition administration.

Repealing the 2016 amendments to the Assembly Act was one of the pledges of the coalition government. MRM had called back to the pledge and said they should repeal it soon.

In the police's statement, they said that a large number of people were arriving to Male' to participate in the anti-India rally to be held in Male' on Friday by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC). The rally's activities include blocking roads and using large number of vehicles to obstruct transport services as well.

"... since the planned rally may disrupt security services we have informed them [PPM/PNC Coalition] to hold the rally," police has said.

Police has urged people to not participate in the rally and that they would search vehicles and marine vessels that may facilitate illegal activities.
