The Regional Airports Company (RACL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National University of Maldives (MNU) to conduct a national study on air cargo in the country.

The agreement was signed by Managing Director of RACL Ahmed Mubeen and Vice Chancellor of MNU Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Ahmed.

The Managing Director of RACL said the decision to conduct such a study was taken to identify the areas where the company could expand its services. He added that since the Maldives is an island nation, there is a need to understand the problems faced in providing medicines and consumer goods in the country.

Mubeen said that as tourism is developing and expanding across the country, such services need to be made easily available.

He added that drone technology is being used in deliveries by major air cargo services around the world and the study will also help us understand how drone technology can be applied in the field in Maldives as well.

MNU’s Vice Chancellor Dr. Shehenaz said that air cargo is an important service for all economic sectors of the country and this study will help us understand the limitations of providing the service.

"This study will provide insight into the current state of air cargo services in Maldives. We will also be able to ascertain the facilities where cargo can be stored in the country, their capacity and whether there are safe storage facilities for the food being carried by air cargo," said D. Shehenaz said in Dhivehi, the local language.

In addition to the survey, the study will be conducted in all atolls of the country through interviews with the general public.
