Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim stated on Thursday that he is the one who wishes for former President Abdulla Yameen to be released from prison the most.
Yameen is currently serving a 11-year prison sentence for being convicted for bribery and money laundering charges in connection with the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah during his presidency.
Nazim, who ran as the presidential candidate for his own political party, the Maldives National Party (MNP), lost in the first round of the election. He received the fewest votes in the first round, with 2,000 votes. Following his loss, Nazim has decided to join form an alliance with the candidate for the People's National Congress (PNC) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who received the most votes in the first round.
Nazim joined Dr. Muizzu on his campaign tour to Alifu Alifu and Alifu Dhaalu atolls for the second round of the election.
In the meeting held in Alifu Alifu atoll Feridhoo, Nazim said he does not wish for anyone that has been the President of Maldives to be in prison.
“I have to say it is I who wishes the most to free President Yameen,” he said.
"I do not wish for someone who was the president to be in jail. Selective justice... I do not believe in moving forward with unjust verdicts made for particular people," said Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim.
He denied the allegations that he formed a coalition with PPM/PNC based on conditions. He said that this alliance was formed because the government was becoming overly dependent on a particular nation and working in ways that inhibit the freedoms of Maldivians.
