The Maldives National Party (MNP) has decided to run for the vacant seat in the parliament for Guraidhoo constituency and has opened for nominations from within the party.

The seat became vacant following the death of MP Ibrahim Riza, who was the Member of Parliament for the constituency for the past 14 years. Riza passed away in Malaysia last week at the age of 55 after a long battle with cancer.

The deadline for MNP members to submit their nominations is this Tuesday. If a primary becomes necessary, the vote will be held on March 10.

Currently, there are three MNP members in the parliament: Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim, who is also the party's President; Villimalé MP Ahmed Usham, the Vice President of the party; and Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz, who is also a Vice President of MNP.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has also expressed interest in contesting for the vacant seat in the parliament. It has already announced that four candidates will run in the primary scheduled for March 11. Meanwhile, the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has not announced any decisions.

The by-election is scheduled to be held on April 15.
