President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Tuesday, requested the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to provide counsel on appointing former Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain as a Supreme Court Judge.
The president revealed that he had sought the judicial watchdog's advice via a tweet.
Faiz previously served on the interim Supreme Court and filled the position of Chief Justice when members were appointed to the permanent court. However, Faiz was sacked after amendments to the Judicature Act limited the number of Supreme Court Judges to five.
Following the dismissals of former Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi, Supreme Court Judges Adam Mohamed and Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, there are several vacancies on the top court's seven-member bench. Judge Abdulla Areef also recently retired from his position.
As per the constitution, judges for the apex court's bench will be selected by parliament approval from a list of names suggested by the President as per JSC's advice.
Currently, the apex court's bench only consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Aisha Shujoon, Mahaaz Ali Zahir and Husnu al Suood.
