Islamic Ministry Thursday stated that the collected funds of over MVR1.8 million for Rohingya muslims in Myanmar have now been handed over to the Bangladesh Red Crescent.

Whilst a ministry spokesperson has assured that the funds have been handed over to the Bangladesh Red Crescent, no further details of the transaction were revealed.

Amidst media reports speculating the whereabouts of the Rohingya funds collected throughout last year, Islamic minister made a statement revealing that the administrative work of the process had been completed. However, when inquired by the media, the foreign ministry revealed they had no knowledge of such transactions to the Bangladesh Red Crescent.

In early November 2017, Islamic minister Dr Ahmed Ziyad Baqir had said that the funds will be presented to the Bangladesh Red Crescent within the month.

Islamic ministry on Thursday reported to relevant authorities over media reports that speculated the whereabouts of the Rohingya fund money. Speaking to Public Service Media (PSM), the Islamic minister said that media outlets were looking to tarnish the ministry’s image in the public. The minister also reasoned that the delay in the transaction was due to hinders in its’ administrative process.

Local media outlet Raajje TV had also raised funds of USD500,00 for the Rohingya muslims. The funds raised by Raajje TV were handed over to the Banglesh red crescent earlier.

Nearly 70,000 Rohingya muslims have fled to Bangladesh since Myanmar launched a brutal crackdown on insurgents six months ago that the US and the UN have called ethnic cleansing.
