Maldives Media Council (MMA) has elected new members.
The election was held at the Social Centre in Malé on Saturday.
Seven members from different media outlets, and six members from the general public are elected to the council. Ten individuals from the media submitted their candidacies for the seven seats.
A total of 99 media outlets voted in this election.
The members elected from the media are:
1. Ahmed Azif, Sun Online (85 votes)
2. Mohamed Simau, One Online (85 votes)
3. Mohamed Afrah, Thiladhun (83 votes)
4. Moosa Rasheed, Mihaaru (80 votes)
5. Hussain Shareef, Vaguthu (75 votes)
6. Ahmed Musthafa, PSM (62 votes)
7. Ali Nishan, Aafathis Online (58 votes)
The members elected from the public are:
1. Aruman Rasheed (84 votes)
2. Ahmed Shaffan (79 votes)
3. Fathmath Shazly (77 votes)
4. Ahmed Ameen (54 votes)
5. Mohamed Naseer (52 votes)
6. Ali Rasheed Ibrahim (48 votes)
The term of the current members of the council will expire on 14 December.
The members are elected for a tenure of two years.
The MMC was established in 2010 with the mission of ensuring press freedom in the Maldives, as well as investigating and taking appropriate action against acts that violate the code of conduct that all media outlets are required to follow.
