A Sri Lankan man who travelled to Maldives was denied entry into the country at the airport because he had been previously deported, Maldives Immigration has said.

The man who was denied entry is Nadeesh Perera, a Sri Lankan man who was earlier married to a Maldivian.

After he was turned away by Immigration, his lawyers and some members of the public have expressed concerns on social media.

A Media Official of Maldives Immigration clarified that Perera is not allowed entry into Maldives under Article 8 of the Immigration Act.

The Official said that Perera had been deported barring return from the fourth of May under Article 33 of the Immigration Act, in view of Article 20.

The specified article defines the actions that are to be taken against foreigners who breach the law.

Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Sham'aan stated that the Immigration Law will be enforced without discrimination to all persons.
