The state generated an income of MVR 2.03 billion through Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in December 2021.

The income generated in December is the highest amount the state had been able to generate in a single month last year. The total exceeded the projected value by 45 percent.

According to MIRA, December's revenue in 2021 had a substantial increase compared to 2020 due to tourist arrivals increasing as well. Maldives welcomed four times as much tourists last month as the nation did in December 2020.

MIRA collected MVR 952.77 in GST, MVR 485.44 million in tourism land rent, and MVR 153.60 million as lease period extension fee in December 2021, in addition to MVR 95.69 million as income tax, and MVR 94.41 million as Green Tax.

While the state generated over MVR 15 billion in total through MIRA last year, the month with the second highest revenue generated was September. Travel restrictions were loosened in September, which resulted in an increase of tourist arrivals from India, which in turn reflected in the higher income generated.

Maldives always observes an increase in tourist arrivals in December and January of each year.
