The Supreme Court has decided to accept the case submitted by the Prosecutor General's Office appealing to submit new evidence in the retrial of the corruption and money laundering cases against former President Abdulla Yameen.

The cases are up for retrial after the High Court revoked the conviction of Yameen in the money laundering and bribery involved in leasing of Vaavu Atoll Aarah, and the subsequent 11 year prison sentence against him, and ordered a retrial. At the time, the High Court also ruled that in the retrial, new evidence presented by the State cannot be accepted.

The State then appealed to the Supreme Court to rule that the new evidence can be accepted. The Supreme Court has now decided to accept the case, but they have not commenced hearings as of yet.

High Court also repealed the conviction of former parliamentarian for Felidhoo constituency Yoosuf Naeem in the same case. The State appealed to the Supreme Court in Naeem's case as well, and the apex court has accepted this case as well.

While the Supreme Court has accepted these cases, Criminal Court has scheduled to commence hearings in the Aarah case tomorrow.
