Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has been invited to the oath-taking ceremony of the new President-Elect of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The President-Elect’s spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi stated that the Indian PM was invited to the oath-taking ceremony, during a phone call initiated by Modi, after Solih’s victory in the Presidential Elections.
Speaking at the news conference held on Wednesday, Mariya revealed that Modi also invited Solih to make an official visit to India.
Solih has accepted the invitation, and assured the Indian PM that he would reinforce Maldives' ties with India.
The island nation's relations with India grew strained during President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's rule, with tensions peaking after India criticised the current government's refusal to enforce the Supreme Court's unprecedented ruling on February 1 ordering the release of political prisoners.
