President Solih, Minister Shahid foreign policy priorities

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Tuesday, met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid to strategize over and re-prioritize Maldives' foreign policy, with consideration to the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

During the meeting held at the President’s Office, foreign ministry executives briefed President Solih on their roadmap to effectively utilize diplomatic missions and other ministry resources to reach foreign policy goals.

In accordance with the incumbent administration's foreign policy vision, the presentation emphasized that Maldives’ diplomatic efforts would be centred on the protection of human rights and climate change advocacy.

The presentation also elaborated the foreign ministry’s strategies to enhance trade and investment opportunities, obtain foreign direct investment and assistance, bolster the tourism industry and secure support for Maldives' effort to address challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expressing gratitude toward Minister Shahid and the foreign ministry executives, President Solih commended the hardwork of Maldivian diplomats working within the country as well as those stationed in diplomatic missions across the world.

The president acknowledged their contributions to support Maldives' COVID-19 response and wider efforts to promote Maldivian interests in the international arena.
