There is no more propaganda that convicted former President Mohamed Nasheed’s team can spread about the Maldives in Europe as they have lost their credibility, proclaimed ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan on Monday.
PPM’s parliamentary group recently visited Geneva, Switzerland on request of President Abdulla Yameen to discuss the political landscape of the Maldives with international bodies.
Speaking to Mihaaru after the trip, MP Nihan accused Nasheed’s team of propagating various untruths about the Maldives in Europe over the past 15 years, notably the “cruel” dictatorship of Nasheed’s predecessor, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
“We defended President Maumoon even back then, but Nasheed’s team went knocking on the doors of Europe, claiming that Maumoon was a murderer, that he was cruel to the people and evil. But the person they considered ‘bad’ yesterday is now ‘good’,” said Nihan, referring to Nasheed and Maumoon recently teaming up in the joint opposition effort against the incumbent president.
He declared that such hypocrisy from Nasheed’s team has exposed their lies and compromised their credibility before the world.
“With the way they’re doing things, even Europe won’t believe [their claims].”
The lawmaker went on to claim that the former president and his team had also propagated fabrications regarding other issues, such as the impending implementation of capital punishment in the Maldives and parliament sittings.
“We cleared up all those lies in Geneva. Nasheed’s team had lied that a parliament sitting was held July 24. But it was previously announced that no sittings would be held that day,” he said as an example of the propaganda allegedly spread by the former president.
Declaring that falsehoods invented by Nasheed’s team have been exposed, MP Nihan stated that there are no more lies Nasheed’s team can spread about the Maldives.
He added that PPM should have taken action much earlier to combat the propaganda instigated by Nasheed’s team against the nation.
