The two day seminar will focus on discussing the Trademark Bill and training employees from relevant agencies on the process of trademark registration.
Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, in partnership with Maldives Customs Service and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has commenced a seminar today to discuss the Trademark Bill being prepared to be sent to the Parliament.
The two-day seminar will see experts discuss various aspects of the bill, and will also have employees from relevant agencies trained on trademark rights. This includes providing information on the requirements of trademark registration, the registration process itself, as well as potential issues that could arise in the process.
As such employees from the Economic Ministry, Maldives Customs Service, Attorney General's Office, Prosecutor General's Office, Youth Ministry, Maldives Police Service, Bar Council, and Business Center Corporation are participating in the seminar which is set to conclude tomorrow.
As of now, the Economic Ministry has forwarded amendments to the Copyrights Act and other relevant legislations to protect and safeguard intellectual property in the country. This is being done as a means to ensure that businesses get the most out of their intellectual property, and to foster greater confidence in the country's business environment in the eyes of investors.
The Economic Ministry is working on forwarding the Trademark Bill to the Parliament within this year.
In addition to the Trademark Bill, the Ministry is also in the process of formulating a Patent Bill and a bill on geographical indications. Furthermore, there are plan to establish a collective management organization which would provide royalties to people engaged in literary and artistic work.
