Maldives Correctional Service on Tuesday evening, December 26, said it was reviewing the leniencies issued to former President Abdulla Yameen over his participation in recent political activities.

The former President, who is serving an 11-year jail sentence for the conviction of money laundering and graft charges, has been actively involved in the political activities of the People's National Front (PNF), the political party he founded.

The Prisons and Parole Act of the Maldives specifies that incarcerated individuals do not have the right to establish, organize, or lead political activities, with the exception of participating in any political activity as an ordinary member of a party.

Despite the legal intervention, Maldives Correctional Services previously reviewed two separate occasions where Yameen had participated in political activities in the capacity of a leading figure. The authority however, did not take any action against him.

According to the authority on Tuesday evening, it was reviewing the leniencies extended to the former president but did not disclose additional details on the matter.

Previously, Yameen had requested additional leniencies from Correctional Services, which included the right to attend the party office, meet with general members, engage with the media, and participate in TV programs for interviews.

However, Correctional Services did not extend these leniencies.

Former President Yameen's release was a significant topic during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's campaign. However, delays in Yameen's acquittal created tensions between him and the current President, leading to the former President leaving the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to establish his new party.
