President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that housing will be provided to the employees of Maldives Correctional Service.

Speaking at the 51st Anniversary of Correctional Services yesterday, the President said the government would provide housing for employees of the organization under the states ongoing housing project.

The President said there are many difficulties and concerns in carrying out the responsibilities and duties of prison officers. One of them is the difficulties in arranging accommodation for prison officers and employees working in prisons.

The President said that an audit of the prisons has been conducted during the first 100 days of his administration.

"The audit revealed that there are many administrative reforms that need to be made in the prisons and reforms that need to be made in matters relating to prisoners. In line with the recommendations of the audit, reforms are already underway," he said.

President Solih said for the first time in the history of Maldives, a drug rehabilitation program was successfully completed in the jail and 32 prisoners were released to their families. He said it is a very important policy of the government to rehabilitate prisoners and reintegrate them into society.

The President also said the biggest challenge in maintaining prisons is overcrowding and the solution is to increase the space, which the state is working towards.
