Maldives Correctional Services, on Tuesday, began to make arrangements for lawyers to conduct physical client meetings with detainees inside correctional facilities.

Lawyer meetings were initially barred by MCS amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

However, visitations to the prisons located on Maafushi and Himmafushi in Kaafu Atoll, will require special permits granted by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) per visit.

Although restrictions on legal representation were eased, lawyers still retain the ability to conduct virtual meetings with their clients.

Should there be a surge in virus transmissions, however, MCS warned of the possibility of reverting the decision to allow face-to-face meetings.

Authorities have previously awarded clients the opportunity to meet their legal team under special circumstances.
