Aleem Foundation, established by Nabeela Shihab, has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to construct a mosque in memory of her late husband, Ahmed Aleem.
Ahmed Aleem served in the Maldives Police Services for 17 years, also working as the Head of the Family and Child Protection Department during this time. He moved to Australia 13 years ago to pursue further studies.
He met Nabeela and married 11 years ago, after which the couple got two children.
Aleem was diagnosed with the last stage of bile duct cancer on January 14, 2022, and passed away in April that year.
Nabeela has conducted various fundraising activities through Aleem Foundation to facilitate building a mosque in his memory.
She intended to build the mosque in Australia, but later decided to build the first one in Maldives based on the support she received from the ministry.
"To build a mosque in Australia, we have to first buy land. We have the funds arranged for that as well. However, with the opportunity that has been given by the Islamic Ministry, we do not need to spend on buying land. This is a huge assistance financially. That's why we decided to build the mosque in Maldives first," Nabeela said.
