The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday, celebrated its 88th anniversary across all countries in which Maldives maintains a diplomatic presence.

Initially established in 1932 following the ratification of Maldives' first constitution, the foreign ministry now manages 17 missions in 16 countries, two of which are located in India.

Commemorating the 88th anniversary, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid highlighted the crucial role that the ministry has served throughout the country's history.

Shahid also commended the service of Maldives' first foreign minister, Al Ameer Hassan Fareed Didi.

Having filled the ministerial position from 1932 to 1944, Al Ameer Hassan Fareed Didi passed away in 1944 while en route to Colombo on a mission to secure essential food items to alleviate the famine in Maldives caused by the Second World War.

Minister Shahid went on to state that the foreign ministry's diplomatic staff "continues to follow his example of dedication, commitment and service".

Till date, a total of 12 individuals have served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.

According to the foreign ministry, all celebratory activities were held in accordance with the safety guidelines issued by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) or the rules imposed by the country in which the event took place.

Maldives codified its first constitution on December 22, 1932, during the reign of Sultan Mohamed Shamsudeen Iskandar III. Consequently, several government ministries, including the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education, marked their 88th anniversary in 2020.
