The Parliament Secretariat scheduled the first parliamentary sitting of 2019 for February 7 on Thursday.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will deliver a presidential address regarding the state of the country during the sitting which is to be held at the convention centre of Dharubaaruge.

The parliament commenced recess on December 15, 2018, in spite of a considerable number of pending bills due to insufficient attendance on the part of the lawmakers.

The incomplete items on the agenda include amending the Pension Act to enable the utilization of pension funds to finance pilgrimage and make a decision regarding the bill which proposed to set up a Bar Association in Maldives.

Despite the pending workload, the third parliamentary session of 2018 was significantly productive with several bills and amendments approved under the leadership of Parliament Speaker Qasim Ibrahim.

The constitution stipulates that the initial sitting of the first term of parliament should be held within the first week of February.
