President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to designate islands for recreational purposes, within the first 100 days of his term in office.

The purpose of these islands is to serve as destinations for families to go on leisure trips during weekends. In addition, picnic areas will be designated on inhabited islands that currently do not have such locations.

There are also plans to allocate specific areas of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’s beach for night swimming and build showering areas. Several regions in capital Male’ are to be specialized for recreational use as well, including Galolhu City Park, 'Rasfannu', Artificial Beach, 'Usfasgandu' and surf spot ‘Raalhugandu’.

President Solih’s administration further plans to establish "weekend markets" within the next two months. Such markets were also run during the regime of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Islands previously popular among locals for recreational purposes in the vicinity of the capital city were leased for tourism during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. There was public outcry when the islands of Kuda Bandos and Feydhoo Finolhu were allocated for resort development.
