The newly elected Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, City Councilors and members of the Women's Development Committee (WDC) were sworn into office on Monday.

This commenced the fourth term of the Male' City Council.

The oath taking ceremony was conducted virtually in order to contain physical meetings to a minimum with the current surge of COVID-19 cases.

The ceremony displayed via screen all the members that took their oaths and signed their declarations.

High court Chief Justice Athif Hilmy administrated the oath for Mayor Muizzu and the other council and WDC members.

The video report highlighting the achievements and obstacles faced by the previous council was shown during the ceremony.

Afterwards, the first session of the fourth term of the Male' City Council was conducted.

The seat of Male' Mayor has always been held by a candidate from ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) candidate until this election.

Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is the first one to win this seat from opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). Mayor Muizzu took the lead with 61 percent of the votes.

With 11 seats, PPM won the majority of Male City Council as well.

Oath taking ceremonies of other city councils and island councils will also take place on Monday.

However High Court has decided that presidents of Gaafu Alif Kondey's Council, Haa Alif Filladhoo Council, Laamu Maabaidhoo Council and a member of Thaa Kandoodhoo Council will take their oath at a later date.
