Acting Managing Director (MD) of Maldives Airports Company Pvt Ltd (MACL), Moosa Solih on Sunday revealed that the number of daily scheduled flights from Velana International Airport (VIA) dropped from 40 to two, following the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the ceremony held to mark the 54th anniversary of MACL, Solih also noted that the domestic traffic to the once busy airport had also declined from 50 to five flights per day.

During the special anniversary ceremony, the company stressed on the importance of adhering to social distancing guidelines as a measure to slow the spread of COVID-19. Senior members of the company wore facial masks and maintained an appropriate distance from one another at the meeting.

Acting MD Solih thanked his staff for their hard work and dedication noting the difficult times, making a special note of frontline staff, as doing a notable service for the country.

In a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, the Maldivian government on March 28, enforced strict travel restrictions and stopped issuing on-arrival-visas and closed its borders to incoming tourists.

Additionally, airlines have completely halted or significantly cut down on the frequency of flights all over the world.
