Work on Magoodhoo Airport in Faafu atoll has resumed after a long hiatus.

Magoodhoo Island Council President Abdulla Waheed said last night that the Airport development project which had been handed over to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has resumed again. Work is currently underway on the unfinished section of the airport runway.

Construction of the Magoodhoo Airport had been suspended in March, coinciding with the parliamentary elections. The government however, did not provide a reason for the suspension, which lead to residents protesting over the matter.

The government had also promised to build an airport in Faafu atoll Nilandhoo, located close to Magoodhoo, which was awarded to MTCC as well.

The Magoodhoo Airport, one of the most expensive domestic airports ever constructed at a cost of MVR 252 million, features an 1,800-meter runway capable of accommodating private jets. The airport will also include facilities such as a jet parking area, a fuel farm, a VIP lounge, and a city hotel.
