Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam has today announced the five members of parliament who can preside over sittings in the absence of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the rest of this parliamentary term.

As per Article 44 of the Parliament Regulations, these five members have to be decided upon and announced by the Speaker.

Speaking in today's session, Speaker Aslam announced that the five members have been chosen in alignment with the Regulations, with consideration of longest time served consecutively as MPs.

The five members selected are;

1. Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed - 18 years and 8 months of consecutive service

2. Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim - 14 years and 5 months of consecutive service

3. Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem - 14 years and 5 months of consecutive service

4. Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa - 14 years and 5 months of consecutive service

5. Kuda Huvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir - 14 years and 5 months of consecutive service.

Aslam said that from these five members, precedence will be given to the longest serving members. In the instance that the time served is the same, precedence will be given to whoever is older in age.

The list of members announced today do not include Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef, who was at the top of the previous list, and Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef, who was the second name on the previous list.

In the past days of this parliamentary term, it was MP Afeef who presided over meetings in the absence of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
