The Speaker of Maldives parliament Mr. Mohamed Nasheed has lambasted former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Mr. Nasheed criticized the former statesman for his accusatory statements made with regards to the northern borderline issue.
According to the Parliament Speaker, the former president's statements regarding the issue pose serious threats to the national security of the Maldives.
The former Maldives president had continuously alleged that the Maldivian government has colluded with the Indian state, allowing armed military personnel of the latter to be stationed in various northern atoll islands.
Furthermore, the embittered former statesman claimed that the northern borderline of the Maldives, as well as the oceanic area, are now under the authority of the Indian military.
Mr. Gayoom went on to further add that the current Maldives government agreed with the Indian government allowing the latter to exercise full military rights inside the island nation's borders, including the stationing of warships and weapons import.
However, Parliament Speaker Mr. Nasheed contested Gayoom's statement claiming that all the facilities, infrastructure, and intellectual properties that will be developed at the northern border zone will all come under the Maldivian government.
Nasheed claimed that the northern oceanic area will be utilized for various training exercises and surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
